I've wanted to try diecutting felt for awhile. I love those tiny decorative pillows with diecuts sewn on. So I was very excited to see Nichol Spohr's "Felt Stitch & Create Collection" for Spellbinders.
I received the Pumpkin Lane House, the Acorn House, the Snowy Owl, the Reindeer, and the Forest Fox, so there's more to come! I sewed the Acorn House but couldn't fit it onto this embroidery hoop frame. Here's a photo of my original idea. I wanted to make a little pillow but I have no idea how to do that since I'm not great with a sewing machine.
I have found that the key to diecutting felt is using quality felt. In the past I tried using those inexpensive acrylic felt sheets from Michaels but the edges didn't diecut cleanly. So skip that felt. I have heard that you could buy the acrylic felt that is stiff, but I didn't try those.
This is wool felt, some of this is from Spellbinders, some is from someone I found on Etsy who sells bundles. I diecut the pieces 2x and stitched them together. A few of the pieces I stuffed with fiberfill. Nichol Sphor has a video on her YT channel showing an alternative to fiberfill, a lightweight fabric, I didn't have that so I used what I had. I think I've had that bag of fiberfill for 30 years, no joke. I made a Bucilla tree skirt back then. Felt is great because it doesn't fray.
Side note: You can use cardstock to diecut this set. You can choose to stitch the paper like all those stitching dies you see on cards!
These dies are reminiscent of those Bucilla kits, if you are familiar with them. There's precut felt and beads and sequins in those kits to make holiday decorations. My mother in law made my family Christmas stockings with those kits. Now that she's no longer here, it's a nice memory of her when we decorate for Christmas. The nice thing about these dies is that you can choose your colors! Make the pink pumpkin, whatever color you like, you can personalize this for yourself or for whoever you are making for. This is a nice decoration for Thanksgiving. If you have a pretty script, you could sew Happy Thanksgiving on the wool.
My mom used to buy a Christmas ornaments as a vacation souveniers. She said she liked a reminder of where she went but didn't want it out all year long. I think that's a great idea and have done the same on my vacations. I think the same for making something like this, I can pull it out and put it on my buffet or mantle just for the season. The other diesets can be made into ornaments too or sewn onto a premade Christmas stocking.
There's not much to tell about making this scene. If you can hand sew with thread and a needle, you can make this. First I diecut all the pieces and followed the needle holes to add the thread, stitching the 2 layers together using 2-3 strands of embroidery floss. The DMC floss is 6 strands, I just separated it into whatever I needed.
After I sewed all the individual pieces, I took the navy background felt and put it into the embroidery hoop. I had the hoop but you can find them at any big craft store or on line. I attached all the pieces to the background by stitching them on, except for the "Autumn" word, that I glued on. Glue works well too. You can get fabric glue but I used Scrapbookcom's Artis glue with the included fine tip. The Autumn diecut is cut from felt and from cardstock, just to keep it sturdy since I was gluing it on. It can also be stitched on but this is a regular die and doesn't have the stitching holes.
