Wicked Treats!

 

There's nothing better than getting some new products, except for maybe pulling out some old products to use with them.

I used Tim Holtz/Sizzix "Trick or Treat" dieset with some of the new Vault series. I changed the candied apple to a taffy apple just by changing up the colors. With Sizzix Colorize dies, I have found the 1st layer is usually the one barely seen but generally should be the darkest shade. So for the caramel, the first layer is dark brown, going lighter as they get stacked. I did cover the caramel layer with Glossy Accents just to give it that shine like caramel.

The Blackout Technique and Solar Paste!

 

This is probably a current favorite technique with a lot of people. It's pretty easy to do, I've done it before with some backgrounds HERE and even some patterned paper HERE.

I've had the Simon Hurley/Ranger Solar Pastes for almost a year and a half. I went to use them recently and found the pink one had dried up. There was very little left in the jar and I didn't cover it with Press and Seal Saran Wrap. My mistake. But pastes are meant to be used, and with so much air in the jar it's hard to stay useable. So I pulled the other jars out and started applying the pastes on black cardstock. I know the look good embossed so I figured as long as I applied them onto paper, I could take my time using them. 

I used the gorgeous embossing folder from the Amaryllis Christmas Collection by Yana Smakula. You can see it all HERE.

I remembered the blackout technique and decided to give it a try with this paper. I have a video on this below.

All I did was use the embossing folder with the raised images, meaning that after running it through my diecut machine it would push the image into the paper. I then took a black Archival Ink Pad and rubbed it over the top ot fhe paper. It looks pretty cool.

Spellbinders Colorful Expressions Blooms

 

I don't receive the Spellbinders Large Die of the Month normally, but when I saw this August Large Die Kit of the Month, I had to order it. Yes, I did join the club just to get the lower price but it's now available as a individual buy, you don't have to join the club. You can see it HERE (only available at Spellbinders).

The cardstock I used are all from my scrap file, so I don't have any links for that, except for the background cardstock which is from Spellbinders. I've been making lots of Halloween cards using purple and green, but I don't think it looks Halloween-ish.

Spellbinders October 3D Embossing Folder of the Month!

 

The Spellbinders 3D Embossing Folder of the Month for October is this gorgeous "Joyful Candy Canes". It can be found only at Spellbinders, HERE.

I took a piece of Hammermill cardstock and ink ombre ink blended Distress Oxides in shades of red, Picked Raspberry, Lumberjack Plaid and Aged Mahogany.

After the ink dried, I embossed it with the Spellbinders 3D Embossing Folder of the Month, "Joyful Candycanes". I then rubbed a gold pigment ink pad over the raised images, you can also use an embossing ink pad but I like using a gold pad so I can be sure the ink is covering the areas I want and just in case I miss areas with gold embossing powder, it still looks gold!

For the diecuts, I used "Christmas Bird Poinsettia", minus the bird. It's one of my favorite Christmas diesets.

Spellbinders October Stitching Die of the Month!

 

The Stitching Die of the Month for October is this gorgeous "Merry & Bright Cloche". It can be found only in the Spellbinders Store, click HERE.

I stitched the tree with green DMC Pearl Cotton Floss. This floss is a bit different than traditional floss, you can't divide it. It's twisted together and for this long straight stitch. It's a neater look than regular floss that separates into fewer strands. I purchased this from Michaels.

For the "shell" design on the bottom of the cloche, I used traditional embroidery floss in silver. It's not metallic thread but has a pretty sheen. The "Merry & Bright" sentiment is included in the set.

As always, you can stitch the diecuts or you can leave it solid. It's optional to use the dies with the stitching holes. Such a great thing.

Create a Mixed Media Background for a Christmas Wreath Card:

 I made a mixed media background for this card that is interesting but not too distracting. If you have Distress Spray Stains, you know how fun it is to use them. 

I came up with the way to make this background during 2020, I had watched Tim Holtz show his technique called "Eroded Metallic". During Covid, I couldn't find the metallic Distress Paint he used, so I I used metallic Distress Spray Stain with Distress Resist Spray over it to resist the patina colored sprays I used over it.

I have a YouTube video link below to show you how I used the sprays to create the background. In the video I used a lot of different colors. It's not necessary to use so many. I would say the Tarnished Brass or Antiqued Bronze would be ideal, and then I'd used at least one blue and 1 green. I like the brown and the Rusty Hinge but I've done this technique without them and it still looks good.

I also used one Oxide Spray, Speckled Egg but this isn't a must. I just like the chalky look it provides.

Some people don't like the Distress Resist Spray. You have to spray it into a box or it could stick to whatever surface you spray it on, it's permanent, so don't get it on your table or glass mat. Also, you have to clean out the sprayer after using it or it clogs the sprayer. Watch Tim Holtz's video on how to clean out the sprayer. So if you don't like the spray I'd recommend using clear embossing powder, you'd just have to apply it so it sticks to some of the background. You could use an embossing pen or even spray a little water apply the embossing powder and quickly heat it before the water evaporates.

In my video I also show how to put together the Vault Rosette I use for the back of the wreath. It's pretty easy, I used gold wrapping paper from Michaels and glue. Gold cardstock didn't work, it was too thick. A good alternative would be gold scrapbook paper.

The diecuts are all cut from inked paper. I take Distress Mixed Media Paper and dip it into Distress Inks in various colors I have on hand. I applied some Distress Rock Candy with Glossy Accents in a few of the areas for shine. You could also used glitter or clear Stickles.

The sentiment is a Tim Holtz stamp, called Tiny Text Christmas. I stamped the entire set on black cardstock and white heat embossed it. Then I cut the pieces with a trimmer and always have a bunch of sentiments on hand.
